LeVon Barnes has many roles in the Durham community, one is a PE teacher at The School for Creative Studies, and the other is the founder and leader of Young Male Achievers. From NYC to NC, LeVon has thrived throughout his life and career, all the while focusing on developing new leaders along the way, truly a lifelong educator.As a teacher, he has the opportunity to impact the youth in Durham, teaching the importance of giving back and helping them see skills in themselves that they might not normally see. He talks about teaching saying, “I don’t even call it a job because I’m passionate about working with young people. Every single day … I get to work with everybody from 12 to 19, students who are trying to figure it out and who come from all different walks of life. It’s not my job to teach out of a book, but to teach them the tools they’ll need to make it out here.” In 2005 he founded Young Male Achievers, not just a club, but “a movement”, he explains. It’s about “civic duty and the responsibly to help people; speaking up for those who cannot speak up for themselves.” He first started the movement when he was living in D.C. He saw the positive effects it had on youth and their families, so when he moved to Durham, the movement came with him.These stories are the reason why LeVon is running for office. He’s always dreamed big and set high goals for himself; focusing on what will be most impactful. He believes that City Council can have an immediate impact on youth if young people are just brought to the table. LeVon is determined to bring positive change to everyone in Durham and believes serving as a Councilman for Ward 2 is the next step. “I’m passionate about the people of Durham; I’m passionate about what I can bring to the table.” He explains that “It’s not about the titles for me, it’s not about prestige. I think the core of politics is to help people. We have to get back to helping people. And it starts locally.”
