Lew Best is a licensed private investigator and provides executive protection after retiring from over thirty-eight years in law enforcement. He also works for the National Hockey League (NHL) as a security representative in Boston. He last served as a Captain with the Amtrak Police Department and prior to that he served twenty-five years with the MBTA Transit Police, including five years as Deputy Chief. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, Session #244 and the Senior Management Institute for Police, a program of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF).While at the Transit Police he oversaw the Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Division and worked on security initiatives with international, federal, state and local agencies and private sector partners to safeguard mass transit and public transportation systems nationwide. He served on various homeland security committees and working groups and assisted in managing DHS grants for the MBTA, which is the nation's fourth largest transit system. In addition, he served as Division Commander of the Investigative Services Division, which included the Intelligence Unit, the Criminal Investigations Unit, the Anti-Corruption Unit, the Crime Scene Services Unit and Juvenile Services. He served in the Investigative Services Division for eighteen years. Prior to his promotion to Deputy Chief, he served in various supervisory positions, including as Lieutenant Detective and Commander of the Intelligence Unit and the Internal Security Unit. As a Detective he was assigned to the Major Case Unit and prior to that position he was assigned to the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) where he was a federally deputized Task Force Agent.He also served in various capacities in the Patrol Operations Division, including foot and mobile patrol assignments, as a field training officer and with the Motorcycle Unit.
