I was assigned to a project that was to transform a monolith application with very little documentation into more of a scalable decoupled architecture.We had many discussions around the pros and cons of the lift and shift approach (also known as rehosting) and what timeframes we had to contend with.In the end we ended up refactoring the application into a few separated containerised applications in ecs to simplify inter-container communication with a separated database. Most of the challenges were understanding how the code is meant to act and how to get the pieces talking to each other from separated endpoints rather than a local service.Cloudmap was introduced to improve service discovery and pipelines were built with CodePipeline and Github runners depending on specific requirements.

The role involves looking after the AWS infrastructure, architecting improvements, building private and public terraform plugins, and releasing newly built AMI's.I had to build out a module which we could use to deploy abstracted code onto an ECS cluster quickly, some would run as services and others would run as tasks.I built out an MSK cluster and improved security by removing credentials by implementing a credential-less pipeline based on a blog that I wrote for AWS Community Builders (https://dev.to/aws-builders/creating-a-credential-less-terraform-pipeline-4o3g).I had sharded a Redis cluster and integrated Tailscale along with building diagrams for their infrastructure, helping them understand the overlap with their networks.I was also supporting other engineers and helping them become certified.

The majority of this role was dealing with customer deployments, I would use terraform to plan and make any required changes, once happy, I will communicate with the customer and deploy through Jenkins running on Kubernetes, I will then be responsible for fixing any issues that come up on the deployment and reporting back any issues.Outside of the releases, I have been writing some Ansible and writing Lambdas mainly in Python.

In this role I spent quite alot of time managing customer support requests and issues with their VDI solution (Hyper-V), this entails working with Windows Server, Active Directory, UDP's.I spent quite a bit of time writing scripts which ranged in languages from powershell, vb and c# applications.I also would deal with setting up, configuring and troubleshooting SQL server.A great deal of work involves troubleshooting and fixing software and making it work in a virtualised environment when the software providers will not support it.

In this role, I have to provide connectivity to the end user by using tools such as a TDR to measure the distance of disconnections. If there is no line or it needs replacing I would have to climb up the pole and run a new drop-wire to the property then connect it to the cabinet. In the cabinets, I have to use a variety of punch down or crimping tools to connect the wires together and complete the circuits. I have had many jobs in comms rooms and highly restricted areas where I will connect their socket to the internal DP and route the cable across to the requested point of installation. This job requires customer service skills and a lot of patience.

This company provides training for the HVG and PSV vehicles to pass certain tests required by law. In this role I set up SAN's, routers and firewalls. I spent time setting up new windows computers with their required configuration whilst repairing and replacing other damaged devices. I also set up backup scripts for automation.

In this role I had to look after clients whilst setting up and managing the IT infrastructure that all the websites we were building was hosted on. This involved setting up a LAMP stack and putting in plans for failure and ways to expand the infrastructure. I also had to debug and program web based software using the following: HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Javascript, Ajax and jQuery.
