About Lewis Stratton

Workplace safety conversations often start with, "I haven't seen an incident or an injury that hasn't happened before." We shouldn't be surprised about anything around health and safety in the workplace. I also add that I ride a motorbike, scuba drive and pay money to be dropped in the ocean with sharks! I share this to demonstrate that I understand risks, how to live with them and navigate the best way forward without missing out on living and being productive.Legislation can be read by anyone, but I can see the simplicity in legislation and provide you with simple solutions based on what you are currently experiencing. The determining factor to applying legislation is to understand what Safe Work SA cares about, so together, we can work to the reality of what is needed now and what isn't.➤ Incidents, Problems or Embarrassments are when I am most often called upon.Let's face it, nobody cares until there is a crisis, an emergency, or a near miss, or a notifiable incident has occurred. Or you're being investigated by the Regulator - Safe Work SA - because you have failed a legal obligation.➤ Audits & IncidentsWhen an incident or audit outcome occurs, we attend to the “right now” specifics up front. We provide a consultative policy and processes draft so you can prevent the same thing from happening again, which makes sure you are legislatively compliant. Then we will work out a plan to provide longevity & sustainability to your WHS.➤ Proactive WHS scenariosA new CEO proactively wants to avoid problems. They say, "We need somebody to come and do four audits a year, around two workplace inspections." They have a robust system in place and use me to mitigate risk as part of their checking & sustainability process. We help you with:• Writing Policies & Procedures• Workplace Audits• Workplace Health & Safety Training➤ Safety & ComplianceThe common problems are common problems! We all want the same thing, for people to be safe and not be exposed to unwarranted risk, to get home safely at the end of the day.You see, it's not that hard. I can help you navigate WHS because I know the simplicity of the legislation & can give you a simple solution to resolve your current or future problems. If you need clarity or support then email me lewis@strattonsafety.com.au or call 0405 321 874

When it comes to Policy & Procedures, the most common thing I hear is;"Look, we've got a health & safety system. We have all these policies and procedures. These people just aren't doing it!"This translates to the fact that the WHS systems are often quite serviceable but a little out of date; BUT what isn't happening is the monitoring or measuring of the actual performance of the system & the lead indicators that keep the place healthy & safe. Common causes are a lack of training, supervision, and adequate Reporting Frameworks to keep it all on track.WHS Training & Support• Health & Safety Representative Training• Safety Committee Training• WHS Officer TrainingSafe workplaces are created and maintained with more than a "We have the paperwork, the job is done” attitude! However, it is a simple solution! The two most common critical & missing factors are planning your safety checks, followed by execution of ensuring the reviews occur. We know it is as often as simple as, "Here's some reporting you should be asking for.”Let me share a story to demonstrate how a simple change in communication creates an active & safe environment with organisational buy-in. Imagine for a moment that you are boarding a small plane with one Flight Attendant. As you all take your seats & settle in, he comes on the microphone. His request is simple, "Can someone in Row 2 please move to the back of the plane."As you can imagine, everyone is now uncomfortably looking away, avoiding eye contact & not wanting to be the one that moves. He repeats his request with no change in action. He pauses and then adds, "OK, I need someone to move to the back of the plane so we can balance out the weight so we will be able to take off!"Now people in Row 2 have an active reason ‘why’ someone needs to move. With the correct information, support and training, your people will be actively involved in the organisation's safety. You will have buy-in.Email - lewis@strattonsafety.com.au

Workplace & Safety Audits, when done regularly & correctly, ensure that your staff go home to their families wholly and entirely every day from work. When safety isn't managed correctly, you risk your team going home incomplete or no longer with their families.WHS Audit work comes in 2 forms;1. Maintaining & checking current WHS to be safe & sustainable.2. Failure of a recent external Audit.➤ WHS MaintenanceSelf-insured employers have significant financial advantages in maintaining your status. It's essential to be diligent in preparing & executing your audits so your self-insured status isn't revoked & you are left paying a hefty levy to Return to Work SA.Proactive workplaces utilise me to help prevent problems. They say, "We need somebody to come & do four audits a year, around two workplace inspections." They have a robust WHS system in place & use me as part of their checking & sustainability process. Random audits help you cross-check that your systems & reports are working & remain sustainable.➤ Incidents & Failed AuditsWhen an incident or negative audit occurs, we immediately attend to the current issue. Then provide you with a consultative policy & processes draft to prevent the same thing from happening again, making sure you are legislatively compliant. Then we will work out a plan to provide sustainability to your WHS.➤ Workplace Health & Safety StandardsI know you don't look at WHS in this depth, but the good news is I do, I can help you to be safe & compliant in a simple fashion with a few key questions.1. Do you have Leadership actively involved in managing safety?2. What Planning is needed & what do you have already in place? Knowing this helps write the policies & procedures. 3. What has been implemented in training, testing and tagging, workplace inspections?4. Is the Reporting Framework keeping it all on track?5. Are the Senior Leaders Reviewing the reports to track & update the processes? It doesn't have to be complex.
