Social media is a weapon of mass consumption. The average 17 year-old spends almost 6h per day on social media apps designed to addict through intermittent random reward - the same psychological manipulation tactics as gambling companies. Children who spend 3+ hours per day on social media face double the risk of mental health problems including depression and anxiety, as well as a catastrophic loss of productivity. We've seen first hand the negative impact of social media on our peers and forecast a devastating loss of potential in the future, to the detriment of individuals, society and GDP. We believe legislation, education and ethical design must protect children against the commoditisation of their attention and harmful addictive technologies. When our proposed legislation is adopted, children will witness an improvement in mental health, productivity and academic performance. Society will experience a reduction in the impact of polarisation and gender divide as well as improved GDP to name but a few benefits. Holding social media companies accountable for unethical practices will inspire countries around the world to enact similar legislation, causing a chain reaction of positive change on an international scale.
