I work as a member of a 37 person Costume Shop. The Costume Floor Manager reports to the Costume Director, and works alongside a Costume Administrator, Shopper, Drapers, First Hands, Stitchers, Stitcher Apprentices, a Costume Administrator Apprentice, and a Costume Design Apprentice. I oversees and complete Costume Shop set up, upkeep, and breakdown - including machine maintenance and repair. I am responsible for reassigning and balancing employees between teams in the Costume Shop and Crafts Shop throughout the season. The Shop Manager is in charge of creating appropriate Production Archive Books before each Draper’s arrival, facilitating and creating appropriate tracking and archival paperwork, assisting in Designer/ Draper/ Costume Director/ Stage Management communication, and distributing applicable rehearsal notes to staff. I supervise the pulling and tracking of rehearsal costumes; assist in pulling, restocking, and organizing inventory in Costume Storage; and coordinate transportation of designers and staff to and from storage, campus, and rehearsal spaces. I keep inventory and manage order requests for the costume shop, purchasing supplies and equipment as necessary, and help coordinate Dry Cleaning during Strike at the end of the season. The Shop Manager facilitates the scheduling of fittings with the Artistic Department, oversees fitting room preparedness, assists in fittings, acts as a direct liaison between Wardrobe and the Costume Shop, and is on call for dress rehearsals of assigned shows (5 shows in 2023 season).Advanced knowledge of computers and Google Suites, an understanding of Costume Shop terminology and construction, and Stage Management background has proven incredibly helpful to success in this position. The Costume Shop Manager works closely with Safety and Production departments to maintain safe work habits and shop practices among all shop employees - including leading daily stretches during morning announcements.
