About Alexandra Baran
I studied Fine Art Photography at Corcoran School of Art & Design in Washington D.C. I spent my first two years here learning about analog photography - shooting on a wide variety of different films and cameras, I honed my printing skills in the darkroom. I had extensive training in image editing and retouching, digital printing, studio lighting, and video creation. I experimented with a combination of mediums, pairing my own photographs and drawings with printed ephemera I had meticulously collected - something I still practice today. For my senior thesis project, I decided to go back to basics with black and white straight photography, and exhibited a sequence of framed archival inkjet prints in the Corcoran's gallery. I began to gravitate towards photography in the book format. Pouring over every classic and contemporary photobook I could find, I studied the concepts, design, and sequencing. I eventually made a book of my own after being so inspired by what I saw, compiling multimedia collage pieces made from layered photographs printed on transparency.This interest led me to an editorial opportunity at Daylight Books, where I worked with a catalogue of documentary and fine art photography publications. Managing their social media platforms, I curated selections of photographs from each book, writing informational text to accompany it - insight to the artists' process, the motivation behind the work, the story inside of the image.I went on to continue my work in the contemporary photobook world, through distribution. Managing sales for Citizen Editions, I maintained relationships with a long list of bookshops, museum stores, specialty boutiques, university libraries, and individual collectors. Our curated selection has been stocked in most bookstores across North America - including MoMA, The Strand, Printed Matter, and Marc Jacobs as notable examples. Along with promoting books and artists, my other main objective has been seeking out and acquiring new clients as wholesale carriers of our catalogue.Much of my hands on work in this realm has been at photobook fairs and conventions in New York City. I've managed booths included in AIPAD (Association of International Photography & Art Dealers) Photoville, International Center of Photography's semi-annual book events, and New York Art Book Fair. At these events, I've facilitated artists' book signings, documented via photo and video, conducted on the spot sales, and provided information on the publications to the public.
