I started my internship with the Hunstanton SEA LIFE Sanctuary in June 2016 and ended it in August 2016 to return to school to finish up my degree. I moved to the UK at the beginning of 2018 and picked right back up from where I left off! I currently volunteer on the animal care team doing a variety of tasks, which may include cleaning tanks, pens, pools, running water quality tests, prepping food for all of the creatures in the sanctuary, feeding the residents at the sanctuary, assisting with rescue, rehab, and release of wild seals, and generally caring for the resident seals, penguins, otters, and a variety of ocean species. I also have the chance to interact with the public and educate them on the sanctuary’s efforts and how they can get involved or help save the ocean and its inhabitants.Check out the first seal pup I was able to help save and my picture of her when we first found her on the beach in the link below!

I proudly worked as an animal care technician for the Toledo Area Humane Society. In this position, I provided daily care to a variety of animals (food, water, fresh bedding, walks, enrichment, clean environment), administered vaccines, implanted microchips, drew blood, ran blood and fecal tests, cleaned wounds, inserted IVs, updated medical records, cared for animals in quarantine, conducted adoptions, called back customers, directed customers to certain animals they were looking for, discussed medical documents, took in surrendered animals, picked up animals from partnering shelters, and often organized certain parts of the shelter in my spare time. Additionally, I would foster animals that needed to be in a home rather than shelter environment or be carefully monitored. One of the moments I'm most proud of was the opportunity to drive down to Columbus with one of my coworkers to pick up some dogs that were flown in from Florida, before Hurricane Irma hit. We were able to find all of these dogs loving homes and had a great time with transporting them and getting them to safety!

I would clean cages, feed animals, assist with small medical-related procedures, respond to rescue calls, pick up animals reported in rescue calls, and do a variety of general tasks that helped keep the facility tidy (i.e. dishes, laundry, food prep, etc.)
