Lexszi Spiegel was invited to be a member of the 31st group of Volunteers to serve in Peace Corps Mozambique. On May 15th, 2019 Lexszi Spiegel attended a pre-departure orientation in the US, and on May 17th, 2019, she began a 13-week training program at the Peace Corps training center near Maputo, the country’s capital. The training consisted of intensive Portuguese language instruction, an overview of Mozambican culture and society, and technical training on HIV and AIDS, malaria, nutrition, organizational development and grassroots approaches to development and community health in Mozambique. Lexszi Spiegel also participated regularly in a variety of community activities, including town festivals and religious events. She developed strong friendships with community leaders and her host family. She continually shared and promoted cross-cultural exchanges and increased understanding between the U.S. and Mozambique.
