Developed strategies for impacting federal and state policy resulting in changes to Medicare regulations and the passage of state bans on copay accumulator programs, restrictions on non-medical switching, and implementation of emergency prescription bills. Built influential, positive relationships with government and private entities and represented DPAC’s interests as a liaison at community events and coalitions to further DPAC’s goals. Advocated on behalf of diabetes patients to provide stories and experiences to lawmakers and regulators when they create and evaluate policies so that patient concerns and preferences are considered. Empowered patients and caregivers to advocate for themselves through trainings fly-in days. Provided expertise in disease advocacy, management, and daily life through presentations at congressional briefings, professional trainings and events, and diabetes conferences. Communicated with the CEO daily and with the diabetes community through written materials. Co-authored model state legislation and prepared written and oral testimony for a congressional hearing.

Initiated, monitored, and reported the outcomes of advocacy campaigns through metrics and analytics gleaned from CQRC Engage, uCampaign, CoSchedule, and other advocacy and social media platforms. Collaborated with the CEO to develop DPAC’s position on new and existing health policies; communicated those positions via multiple channels ( blog articles, policy statements, op-eds, press releases.) Created and delivered educational programs on patient advocacy at meetings across the country to inform the public about issues patients are facing and what actions they can take. Assessed applications for the Patient Advisory Board, organized the chosen group for quarterly meetings, and provided counsel on policy issues identified on by the group.

Led national organizers located in Seattle and New York City to create and implement protest marches in 15 US cities, to support the Affordable Care Act. Organized the Washington, D.C. event - coordinated with police departments, rallied support from local organizations, worked with equipment managers, and securing speakers. Founded a 501(c)(4) organization to legally fundraise for the marches.

Represented and counseled clients with physical, intellectual, or psycho-social disabilities as co-lead attorney in legal proceedings and client advocacy meetings, on varied issues (e.g. Individual Education Programs, eligibility for Social Security benefit and student loan discharge, and representative payee requirements. Researched and authored legal memoranda on special education services, language access, Social Security, guardianship, and conservatorship.

Researched legislative intent and history of new and existing legislation, and authored policy papers on changes brought about by new legislation. Communicated with diverse clients to understand and help with issues related to their individual circumstances. Collaborated with parties involved in clients’ issues, including officials at schools, social security offices, government agencies, and medical centers.

Drafted Board decisions on disciplinary actions and settlement agreements between the Board and licensed physicians. Researched and wrote memoranda on legal questions pertaining to the Board's mandate and jurisdiction which was used to expand Board powers over physicians who let their licenses lapse.

Advised homeless families of their right to shelter when the temperature drops to below freezing. Guided potential homeless clients to appropriate resources, including the Virginia Williams Family Resource Center, various Washington, D.C. homeless resource organizations, and legal services. Monitored local government agencies for legal violations and wrote reports of information to supervisor to initiate legal action on the client’s behalf.
