This project was fully funded by one of the UNICEF Cambodia program called "Generation Futures" and joined by many other volunteers. My role was to oversee all parts of the project, such as communication with schools and stakeholders, content and materials management, budgeting, and workshop facilitation. My volunteers and I successfully implemented a three round workshop, each round consisting of five weeks with two schools in the city and another school in a province. Throughout the rounds, all students were able to acquire knowledge on simple machines and a variety of skills, such as collaboration, presentation, discussion and creativity. At the end of each round, all students were put into groups to create a Rube Goldberg machine utilizing all the acquired knowledge on simple machines to compete with other teams for certificates and trophies. It was very inspiring to see how much girls can do in the field that was once believed to only be for men. I’ve learned so much about leadership and communication skills through this project. Rube Goldberg Machine Creator
As a future engineer, I believe in the importance of applying theoretical knowledge to everyday life. I participated in class actively to learn about 6 important simple machines that have helped to make people’s lives easier. Those simple machines are pulley, lever, wedge, screw, inclined plane, and wheel and axle. Later I applied her knowledge, critical thinking skills, and creativity to combine those simple machines into a Rube Goldberg machine to open a front door of my house. My goal was to research how those machines systematically work together and use mathematical concepts to calculate the amount of force applied. I also created a fruit picker that helped my family pick up fruits around the house every day. I met a lot of challenges through these activities as I failed to make it work many times. By taking this challenge, I learned to be appreciative of the process rather than the result. I understand the importance of patience and determination. Show less
