Teaching and Education is a second career for me. It is a calling, a vocation. After ten years teaching, leading, and starting new schools my son, daughter-in-law and I decided to do a school our way. History: I was always responsible for creating the "new offers" in the corporate world - new products and new services. In addition I was blessed to have the opportunity to run quality, manufacturing, and customer service operations and would sometimes be used to diagnose and fix operational performance issues in sales and service offices around the country... (and South America and the UK). Scattered into the mix was a satisfying amount of work and travel in Europe, South America, and Asia. My entry into education was a contract position to help "save" a new school that had been launched and was in danger of closure. I got it back on its feet and moved on to other contract work with a start-up. The next year a teaching job tugged at my heart and I officially began my new career in education. Of note: In the corporate world I could learn any market in about 3 months. In education I was 2 years in and couldn't make sense of it. Then it dawned on me: What we are doing in education doesn't make any sense. That is when I started moving from teaching into helping start new schools. For a Charter School to deliver on a unique mission/vision, you have to be attentive, daily, to an incredible balancing act. All the forces that be try to march you down the path of the public school model. This is a failed mode. However; you have to be attentive to that model as those who regulate you are of the model. Most Charter Schools end up doing what the public schools do, but do it a little better. We are doing something different with the goal of forming students who will seek truth, be academically strong, and ultimately, who will become leaders.
