The Center for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence – Technology and Engineering for Knowledge (COSEE-TEK) and the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Northeast Alliance is funded by the National Science Foundation, in which undergraduate students from minority backgrounds come together to develop technology for oceanic science applications.I had the privilege of leading Team Northeastern (NU), consisting of four other undergraduates. We designed a system that would ideally allowed the mapping of the terrain from the benthic layer and with subsequent analysis, determine the sizes of different plant and animal populations that reside there.This information would be further analyzed in hopes of providing an idea of how that environment was changing over time with respect to specific plant and animal populations.We were able to test our device in the waters of Avery Point, CT. The data we did collect had noise that was unaccounted for, thus we did not get any clear 2-D images as we had hoped. However, the processes of designing and redesigning, particularly when unexpected hurdles were met, was an invaluable experience.
