I participated a a belayer/facilitator for an indoor rock climbing competition at Carabiner's Fairfield indoor climbing gym. My responsibilities included supervising and scoring youth climbers on three routs ranging in difficulty from 5.9 to 5.10+, as well as instruction on knots and tying into a harness. I gained experience instructing young climbers on proper safety procedures and climbing technique.April 27th, 2013

My responsibilities fell under the EMT basic life support scope of practice, including restocking supplies, patient care, and clerical paperwork. I performed vital sign readings such as blood pressure, pulse rate, saturated oxygen, heart rate and EKG. I was involved in patient interaction and direct care, and assisted the staff with evasive procedures and injury management. I learned much about medical laboratory work such as running blood tests through a mass spectrometer, analyzing urine and feces samples, and preparing blood cultures to grow bacteria. I identified different body cells under a microscope, and prepared slides for viewing. I learned how to determine blood type and Rh factor for transfusions. I was also involved in medical insurance and health records information management.
