I am currently a research fellow in the Wrightbus Technology Centre, which is part of the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at QUB. The W-Tech research centre was set up as a joint venture between the Wrights Group and QUB as a centre of excellence for world-leading research into advanced engineering and development of technologies to meet the needs of the increasingly complex bus industry. I am the lead research engineer responsible for the FE impact analysis of both current and future bus substructures. An overview of my work is as follows:• CAD modelling – model interrogation, creating and preparing 3D parts and assemblies for finite element analysis.• Development of a finite element modelling methodology for the dynamic analysis of a hydrogen fuel tank support structure under high acceleration load cases.• Validation of a FE modelling methodology against experimental sled tests.• Building of global FE models an detailed global FE models.• Performing fastener loads analyses to check for predicted failures.• Building detailed sub models of critical fasteners of the hydrogen fuel tank support structure.• Building detailed sub models of highly stressed areas of the hydrogen fuel tank support structure.• Preparation of a validation report for submission to the Vehicle Certification Authority. • Assisting with the development of a ‘hydrogen refuelling strategy’. This involved a spreadsheet analysis to estimate the increase in temperature of hydrogen gas inside a pressurised fuel cylinder when filled to 350 bar. This analysis was validated against experimental data recorded during refuelling of a demo hydrogen bus.
