As an interim head of commuications I was responsible for day to day running of a team of 11 as well as being involved in the Future Northants local government reform project and the county council's communications response to the Covid-19 pandemic.The pandemic necissitated introducing new ways of working for the team with a focus on remote working, while maintaining some presence in the Covid incident control room. It also required the introduction of new communications channels and re-purposing of staff to align them to the comms needed for the new challenges.

I was the communications lead for ‘Place’-based services in Northamptonshire, including various infrastructure projects, from charting their funding bids, to marking the start of work to finally the opening ceremonies. This has required commercial awareness and management of the sometimes conflicting priorities of residents, politicians, funding partners and contractors.I was key in communicating corporate and strategic policies as the council changes direction to face nationally-documented financial challenges, including the Next Generation Model; the bid for Unitary status for the county; as well as a fairer-funding deal from central government. I developed strategies for communicating the issuing of a Section 114 Notice by the council, which heralded emergency spending restrictions. This garnered widespread national coverage and heavily contributed to the debate as to whether the government’s ‘austerity’ policy had failed.
