Profile bio

About Liam Bowes

I have been working for the National Ambulance Service for over 5 years now - I joined the service as an Emergency Call Taker who's role was to receive incoming 999 Ambulance calls in the community. My job was to triage these calls in line with AMPDS procedure and provide vital instructions such as talking people through CPR, controlling serious bleeding, administering naloxone and many other post dispatch instructions.I then was promoted to the post of Emergency Medical Dispatcher who's role was to dispatch ambulances, rapid response cars, motorbikes and intermediate care vehicles to emergency calls in the region. I would be responsible for all calls in my region and ensure no patient was left unnecessarily. I would have to liaise with other emergency services and various ED departments passing on vital patient information. This was a fast paced working environment where situational awareness, multi tasking and knowledge of policies and procedures are vital. During my time as a dispatcher I also worked in specialist areas such as aero-medical and critical care dispatch. I was responsible for dispatching our HEMS resources to critically ill patients involved in serious road traffic collisions, farming accidents and everything in-between. This job was extremely rewarding and required me to liaise closely with the Irish Air Corp and Irish Coast Guard. I was also responsible for controlling tactical medical teams who are trained in counter terrorism, mass casualty and CBRNE incidents. I had responsibility for dispatching critical care ambulances for critically unwell patients and organize their interhospital transfers.I now work as an Emergency Medical Supervisor who's role is to oversee all of the above along with many other responsibilities. I get great satisfaction from my job and no day is different. I look forward to my future within the National Ambulance Service.
