Industrial Automation Engineer

Current

Geneva, Switzerland

In the Interlocks controls and Monitoring Section of the Vacuum group (TE-VSC-ICM) I work on the design, development, commissioning, maintenance and support of industrial control applications (PLC + SCADA, hardware and software) to control vacuum equipment and vacuum processes. I work on various projects, such as the design of the whole control architecture (from hardware to PLC software and SCADA UI) for new equipment and processes and the consolidation of existing control software to ensure compatibility with new hardware. The main responsibilities of the role include:• Siemens S7 PLC software development (SCL, STL, FBD, GRAPH) for large industrial installations (LHC and other accelerators at CERN) using native functionalities and CERN’s frameworks (UNICOS and specific Vacuum Controls Framework).• Configuration, development, deployment and maintenance of Siemens S7 series PLCs (S7-300, S7-400, S7-1500, S7-1200, ET200-SP).• 2D CAD electrical design, development and procurement of industrial control crates for vacuum equipment and processes. • Configuration and management of large-scale Industrial Networks and Fieldbuses (Profibus-DP, Profinet, Ethernet).• Development and maintenance of control software for vacuum devices (gauges, pumps, valves) and processes (gas injection) and integration of those devices in the current system (PLC and SCADA).• Configuration and development of Siemens SCADA systems and user interfaces (WinCC-OA).• Production of detailed specifications for new projects, technical reports, user manuals and procedures and delivery of support to the operation teams.• Re-engineering of legacy control systems (Siemens S7-300/S7-400) and control software (STL or code incompatible with new S7 HW) to bring them up to date with current S7 hardware and software.• Maintenance and Commissioning of the Vacuum Control equipment and control software in the Particle Accelerators at CERN.

Oct 2023 - Present

Graduate Mechatronic Design Engineer

Didcot, England, United Kingdom

As a graduate mechatronics design engineer at STFC, I worked on a variety of project-based work consisting in design, analysis, project management and procurement of high accuracy motion systems. The role combined different aspects of motion control such as: mechanical design, electrical design, controls and automation programming and the selection of motion equipment. All these aspects allowed to deliver fundamentally different motion systems, from small high accuracy equipment to large servo motor equipment. The work was mostly based on taking responsibility for parts of larger projects assigned to the mechatronics group, such as the electrical design of a motion system or the programming of an already designed system. The role also required for the development and work on technologies and equipment that had not yet been used by the mechatronics group. To summarise, the main responsibilities of the role included:• Producing concepts, designs and both 2D and 3D CAD drawings for mechanical and electrical engineering projects• Programming Motion Control Units using IEC 61131 for the commissioning of designed motion systems• Producing risk assessments and project plans for undertaken projects• Writing and agreeing on specifications for motion systems to be designed based on customer requirements• Producing calculations and analyses to validate designs• Presenting designs to be reviewed by colleagues and peers• Presenting work in writing and through verbal presentations to different audiences• Procuring designed items and components to be supplied

Placement Automation Engineer

Geneva, Switzerland

As part of the graduate scheme at STFC, I had the opportunity to work for 3 months in the Power Converter Controls section (EPC-CCS) at CERN. The section designs, develops, commissions, maintains and supports industrial control applications (PLC + SCADA, hardware and software) for controlling and interlocking high power converters. My role involved:• contributing to the development of a CI/CD and automatic testing framework for PLC code based on Gitlab CI, Pytest and other Python packages (such as asyncio).• familiarising myself with Siemens S7-1500 PLCs, TIAportal and the UNICOS framework used for generating PLC code at CERN.• exploring the use of formal verification tools developed by CERN (PLCVerif) in the automatic testing framework applied to code developed by CCS.
