Liam Colman Email and Phone Number
I am a dynamic professional with a passion for pushing the boundaries of scientific exploration. Having graduated with a 1st class Master's degree in Physics in April 2021, I have cultivated a strong foundation in both theoretical and experimental physics. My academic journey led me to delve deeply into the captivating realm of low-temperature physics, where I conducted research on sub-mK helium experiments focused on quantum turbulence.Currently, I contribute my expertise to Quantum Design UK & Ireland, where I engage in cutting-edge work at the intersection of physics and technology. My role allows me to translate complex scientific concepts into practical applications, enabling others to innovate and progress in the field.Beyond my professional pursuits, I possess a diverse array of interests. As a guitarist, I find solace and creative expression in music, balancing analytical thinking with artistic flair. Additionally, I have a deep appreciation for the outdoors and enjoy activities such as hiking. My unique blend of academic excellence, unwavering professional dedication, and diverse passions underscores my versatility and adaptability. I am poised to make significant contributions to any endeavour I undertake.

Field Services EngineerQuantum Design Uk And Ireland Jan 2024 - PresentLeatherhead, England, United KingdomResponsible for handling customer requests and installations of low temperature systems, for use in academia and industry. Responsibilities include helping with customer questions, supplying quotes and fixing any system that require it.Specialised in Montana Instrument Cryostats, which allow for a cold environment directly on the optical table. -
Phd StudentLancaster University Oct 2021 - Apr 2023Lancaster, England, United KingdomWe are looking at the application of low temperature physics in dark matter detection. More specifically, we are trying to refine previous methods by using electro-nanomechanical oscillators (nanobeams) within an isolated cryogenic environment (design based up the Lancaster cell design) to detect the deposition of energy from external sources. By increasing the sensitivity, we should be able to measure smaller changes in temperature, and therefore, smaller energy depositions. Furthermore, by using a He3/He4 mixture to obtain near pure He3, we should theoretically see the axial coupling between He3 atoms and the dark matter particle as a detectable deposition of energy into the system. Through a series of techniques developed by particle physicists at Royal Holloway University, it may be possible to measure the deposited energy through the perturbation of the nanobeams oscillations, and therefore determine the type and mass of the incident particle. Additional signal rejection is required for this, which can come in the form of a transition edge sensor (TES).Published Papers:Acoustic emission in bulk normal and superfluid He-3: https://doi.org/10.1063/5.0148457 -
Summer InternLancaster University Jun 2019 - Sep 2019Lancaster, United KingdomHelped to create PCB circuits that would be used voltage regulators and power supplies, in low-temperature experiments. Design software, such as EAGLE and Inventor, was used to design the enclosures that would hold the circuits and hold the required connections. -
Team MemberTropical Butterfly House, Wildlife & Falconry Centre May 2015 - May 2019Sheffield, United KingdomWorked with a small team that was responsible for the car park and a play area. Duties also included handling stock between areas and cleaning the center when required. If the center was busy, I would also have to cover other peoples tasks effectively
