Project Designer
I worked for LDP International, a lighting design consultancy based in Edinburgh. As a project designer, I was involved with a wide spectrum of tasks within the studio which included conceptual design work, client presentation, schematic design, detailed design, bespoke designer lighting, as well as attending client and design team workshops, and the day to day running of jobs. During the course of the year, the small team of designers worked on 23 jobs, which included a large scale masterplan within the holy city of Makkah, the World Expo 2017 Astana, a high end retail facility within Deji Plaza Beijing as well as various large scale mixed use developments in India and Dubai.
Architectural Assistant
I worked for Philippe Rahm for 7 months in Paris. I was working on a winning competition entry for the Jade Eco Park in Taiwan. For the first three months, I worked exclusively on the masterplan for the park, liaising with our landscape architect in Paris and our partner office in Taiwan. I was solely responsible for weekly deadlines and would work unsupervised and help to run this aspect of the project.I would also work on a series of bespoke climatic devices which would help to make the Taiwanese climate more liveable. The devices would blow air or water, naturally clean the air or remove harmful mosquitos. This gave me experience of product design. After the masterplan had been accepted by the Taiwanese authorities and the client, I was moved onto working on the buildings. The first being a series of bespoke plant rooms which would house the air and water machines needed to make the climatic devices work. In tandem to this, I also worked on the maintenance centre, a large scale building which has offices, CCTV rooms and areas of wet/dry storage. Like the masterplan, I was solely responsible for all aspects of these buildings and learned quickly how to use my time efficiently.Aside from drawing, I would also work with a number of interns (usually from 2-7). I would assist to guide them to draw/create documents in the office style and I could also share my large work load with the junior members of the team. I also took it upon myself to check all work from the interns before it was submitted to the project architects. This allowed the project architects to focus directly on their own work without the added worry of the more junior members of the team.During my time at Philippe Rahm, I generally used AutoCAD and the Adobe suite. I had some experience in Rhino also. I worked in a range of scales, including 1:5 detail design.
Gallery Curator
I was approached to curate a series of exhibitions within a space in Edinburgh’s New Town. I used my architecture training to survey the space and create a CAD model for space planning. The first exhibition was conceived from the idea of colour blocking and the power of colour. I hand selected and nurtured 10 artists to create a collective whilst still retaining their own aesthetic. The work ranged from painting, sculpture and video installation. I was given complete creative freedom to create/curate as I pleased. The event was a great success with multiple sales and press coverage.
Gallery Assistant
My work at the gallery allowed me to work closely with artists and buyers on a one-on-one basis. As well as invigilating exhibitions, I helped with the installation of many of the larger shows. I also assisted with gallery sales and with Culture Label, an online gallery which stocks work by the artists we represented.
Architectural Assistant Part 1
My work with NDVR was to get an insight into how an office worked. I learned quickly how to work with increasing deadlines and within a high pressure, fast-paced environment. I gained experience working with new build as well as working with existing buildings and related planning regulations and forms. My role on each project ranged from early design to 1:5 detailing and I experienced a large variety of work stages.
Cad Operator
My work at the company was developing a series of drawings for a large variety of reasons including for clients, contractors and for in-house use.
