Teaching Assistant, Engineering Strategies And Practice
Facilitated classroom tutorials for 60+ students across two semesters for the University of Toronto’s two first-year engineering design courses (APS111 & APS112) that introduce the engineering design process and consist of real client-facing projects. Coached cross-functional student teams on design process fundamentals (including defining product requirements), project management, and ideation Assessed written submissions and oral presentations for quality and compliance with course requirements, and supported student teams in balancing stakeholder needs with course deliverablesFirst undergraduate teaching assistant in history of course; Received favourable reviews from students (rated 4.69 out of 5, compared to average of 4.10 for all thirty teaching assistants)
Research Associate And Thesis Student
Investigated the development of polymeric dental filling materials with superior durability in the oral cavity. Synthesized a novel monomer that mimics the chemistry of aquatic mussel adhesive proteins, that was inspired by a monomer previously synthesized in the Santerre Lab for the repair of craniomaxillofacial deformities (the latter has since been spun out of the Santerre Lab as a startup company).Conducted industry standard mechanical testing of dental adhesive formulations at the University of Toronto's Faculty of Dentistry Labs, Biosafety Level 2. Applied adhesive formulations to human teeth, and artificially aged the bonded interface in an accelerated aging medium.Authored a thesis report titled "Synthesis and Evaluation of Bio-inspired Monomers as Functional Components of Dental Adhesive Resins".The report consisted of an extensive literature review, methods, results & discussion, and conclusion.
Capstone Project Engineer
Worked within a Capstone team to develop a design solution that can accurately measure whole-body vibrations (WBV) transmitted to power wheelchair users during use.The clients (Cathy Choi, OT, and Robyn Davies of the Seating Clinic within Bridgepoint Active Healthcare) required a low-cost, clinically-appropriate means of comparing WBV transmitted to users in different power wheelchair/cushion combinations outside of a controlled laboratory setting.Developed a design solution dubbed "SmartVibes" which consisted of four major subsystems: a TI SensorTag (sensor-microprocessor module), a mechanical subsystem (for safely fixating the SensorTag between the wheelchair user and the seat cushion), a back-end data processing module (which pulls data from the SensorTag and computes relevant vibration metrics as per ISO 2631-1) and a front-end user interface (consisting of a mobile app that displays the computed metrics). The design solution is currently in use by the clients and by occupational therapy students working at Bridgepoint Active Healthcare)
Configuration & Support Analyst (Pey Internship)
Created and executed build & deployment jobs on Jenkins & Rundeck respectively for various teams in IT Department. Reviewed UAT/Production implementation plans and Methods of Procedure documents, provided feedback to team leaders. Configured Apache/Tomcat web servers via Linux command line.Key projects: PasswordState integration for tasks, Installation of Nagios plugins (Perl scripts) on monitoring servers to monitor NetApp appliances (e.g. free space, filesystem usage, etc.)
Management Consultant
Provided consulting services as part of a cross-functional team for an internal consulting project within the University Consulting Group, a pro-bono consulting organization operating within U of T, with strategic aspirations to expand to other universities.Recommended a hub-and-chapter model to the client, developed a funding strategy based on a three-tiered sponsorship package and a financial model of projected costs and revenues. Developed new branding strategies that focus on key stakeholders and channels, sample promotional materials, and a mock-up of a re-designed website with simpler user-interfaceThe client has since followed these recommendations and has successfully launched chapters at Ryerson University, McMaster University, York University, and Western University, while continuing to grow within U of T
Lead Design Engineer
Devised an innovative re-design of patient transfer slings to be used with overhead lifts that reduces the onset of repetitive strain injury in caregivers. Participated in U of T's Hatchery Startup Accelerator Program in Summer, 2016.Consulted expertise of Rotman MBA candidates and U of T Nursing Faculty members for business advice and conceptual validation respectively. Implemented prototypes in various test scenarios at U of T's Nursing Simulation Laboratory (at Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing) under the supervision of Sarah Johnston, RN, MN
Instructor And Data Entry Operator
Research Associate
Worked at Canada's largest rehabilitation hospital within the TRI Home and Community Team, an interdisciplinary team consisting of kinesiology and engineering researchers, along with clinicians and technologists.Conducted the analysis of Motion Capture data for a study related to bathroom safety, specifically in the context of grab bars. The goal was to understand a) how they affect balance (while stepping in/out of a wet bathtub), and b) if they should be required in Canadian Building Standards as a means of preventing falls in a high-risk area in the home.Primary analysis showed that vertical grab bar use provided the greatest improvement in falls prevention
