Siul Eile are groups of neighbouring rural communities coming together to form walking programs and challenges using the local environment in their own community.We build walking programs using local under utilised resources such as quiet country roads, forest paths, tracks and trails.It is designed for local communities to live quality healthy lives, socialise together and to combat rural isolation.Since 2016, in Clogheen Co. Tipperary and surrounding areas we did over 200 walks, attended by over 700 individuals (65% of local population) who between them walked over 40,000km (the equivalent of walking all around the world), all in their own locality. The walkers were of all ages ranging from 4 years to 77 years, with the vast majority in the 45-65 years old range. There was significantly more female participation, comprising of about 75% females to 25% males.The walks were suitable for most people as almost all walks were between 3 and 8km with everyone walking at their own pace.We are looking to spread the impact of Siul Eile to other communities around the country. In 2018 we have added another 6 groups who are all undertaking a variety of walking programs, that are bringing greater health, fitness and tourism opportunities to their areas.To date we have facilitated 340 walks with 75,000km being covered.Most walks are free and are being organised and led by volunteers.
