My research focuses on understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a disease characterised by increased muscularisation and extensive vascular remodelling. Mutations in the bone morphogenetic protein type II receptor (BMPR-II), a receptor member of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily, has been identified as a risk factor, yet it is believed a ‘second hit’ is required.Inflammation has been shown to be a potential contributing risk factor. I am currently exploring the effect known inflammatory mediators have on the bone morphogenetic protein signalling pathway, the dysregulation of which may shed further light on disease aetiology.
