As an Operations Centre Analyst working for Markit I am responsible for the Production, Acceptance, Development and other environments of the Markit infrastructures globally ensuring that service levels are maintained. My daily tasks include the monitoring of the product’s that Markit send out to financial institutions, which includes the raising, assigning, escalating and following up of operational and security incidents in accordance with Incident Management guidelines learnt through ITIL training. Also in this role there is a lot of communication, through email and phone calls, to internal infrastructure, product groups, development teams, sales teams and also to 3rd party vendors, which means my communication skills need to be of the top level in order to portray the NOC as the professional entity that it is

As a 2nd line IT support analyst working for EuroPol I am responsible for the upkeep of over 1500 machines due to the 800+ employees working within the building having 2 PC’s. This in itself is quite a task and when my other responsibilities need to be achieved then work is extremely challenging but also very rewarding. Within this role I am in charge of making sure the user’s workstations are up-to-date and also functioning to their potential, which means making sure the user’s have the latest OS’s with correct patches, also when a user’s computer fails I am able to replace computer with a similar or higher-spec workstation meaning that the user is able to carry on their work. Working in this role I have picked up a strong understanding of Altiris, VMWare, Cisco products, Windows XP & 7 migrations and many more different types of software and hardware, including the daily usage of the CMDB with VMWare Service Manager. Working in Den Haag, Netherlands within a multi-national company has helped broaden my horizons and witness different culture’s in action. Within my role as an Audio-Visual engineer I have many tasks to tackle which can range from setting up and testing meeting rooms in the morning to being in charge of all of the IT and Audio-Visual elements that come with a major meeting/conference catering for up to 120 personnel. This can demand that I work long hours and I am perfectly fine in doing that as I like to get the job done to the best of my ability. With having two job titles I feel I have become a very useful member of the EuroPol IT team as I have skills in many different area’s and like to help out my fellow colleagues when sometimes one of the areas of work is quiet. This, I feel, is helping me progress as an IT engineer and giving me a lot more areas of work to get involved in and advance at.

My role as a support analyst is a customer facing role within the IT Support team. The primary function is to maintain the availability of services for users achieved through the management of incidents, problems and requests on behalf of users via the IT Service Desk system. As a part of the RSL IT Support team it was my duty to execute support tasks and Standard Changes across all end user hardware systems and applications. As a support analyst I am required to be familiar with the concepts and practices required to support IT solutions, whilst also introducing new and effective ways to improve service and minimise downtime for the users.

Within this project I have been tasked with rolling out and configuring the Armed Force's DII system. As a rollout engineer my job is to update the MOD's computer hardware and software systems, an important part of my job has been to check and configure the IP address of every base station installed on-site and to check that is all up and working for the client to log onto after installation. Through this role I have been working to strict deadlines and liaising with many different management figures. My other responsibilities within this role included the logistical aspect of reading and understanding the Network Diagrams provided and making sure everything was in place correctly as well as assisting in the many Server Builds throughout the project from site to site. I left this role to pursue my current employment as I felt my skills would be used better with a more technically challenging job.

As an Installation Technician my responsibilities included the installing and engineering of the customer's Broadband, Virgin Media HDTV and Telco dependent on package chosen by them. In this role it is my job to connect customers to Virgin Media's Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) Network and provide them with the services they require to the highest standard possible, to achieve this I have been trained with the working knowledge of network attenuation, the threats of ingress/egress to the network, the importance of correctly terminated connections throughout the setup and also consideration for the customer's homes with good working practices to hide cables and connectors where possible. Worked on RJ6, RJ7 and RJ11 CATV cables to provide the broadband and TV and used heavy duty two pair cables for the Telco services

In this role I was a part of the Engineering Support Team employed to run, maintain and repair the Bowman Communication Systems that the unit had. Also as an independent Signal Squadron we relied heavily on our own engineers to build and maintain the different Telecommunication systems and networks needed to fulfil any role we were given, this included using the Bowman system, also implementing VSAT systems using a Brent plugged into Fly-Away Satcom system along with utilising the Talon Satcom system on a mobile basis, setting up in one location establishing comms and engineering any faults before having proven comms and then moving to different location to do the same.

Within this role I was a Promina Network Engineer within the Technical Maintenance Troop of my regiment. My responsibilities included being the Network Manager for the Promina Network which spanned across and; and America. This role brought with it a lot of customer liaison within the Helpdesk Engineer role, the customer being the soldiers out on the ground, and with that required myself to keep calm when under enormous pressure as lives could be on the line when communications were down for too long. Also within this role I learned how to write effective and efficient fault logs to help with problem solving and aiding the speed at which future problems were fixed. I used many different systems in this role such as Promina, Avaya, DC2K's, Cisco routers, Linux OS, Passport, Meridian, VSAT, REEBOK Satellite systems, Talon Satcom system, IP/Binary Crypto, Microsoft Server 2003 and VOIP systems. Through using all these systems I acquired a great understanding on the workings of the systems and am still confident in being able to use these systems again in any role I may be put in. Towards the end of my time within the Army I undertook the Network+, Security+ and CCNA courses as part of my resettlement package from the Armed Forces to help with my transition into civilian life.
