As a Program Manager at Keytronic, the 9th largest EMS in NA and the 43rd largest EMS in the world, I am the liaison between my customer and our engineering / production team. I work with my customer reviewing and approving their forecasting based off of material readiness / leadtimes (MRP Systems Experience), reviewing and approving change requests to their design (ECRs / ECOs), and launching new products into production (NPIs). Having a Bachelors of Manufacturing Engineering degree helps me exponentially when it comes to changes in engineering designs as I have a deep understanding of dimensions and tolerances (GD&T), CAD software such as Solidworks, and overall design limitations for mass manufacturing. I must maintain a positive relationship with my customer meeting their forecast, doing my best to meet any change requests they have, and having a professional / polite relationship with all of their team. It’s important to foster a great working relationship with the customer because many times in manufacturing you will fall short of your commitments, you’ll have to reject requests from the customer due to limitations, or you’ll have to inform the customer of cost increases or implications. No customer wants to hear any of these responses, but if you have a good working relationship then you can explain the situation and work together to achieve an agreeable solution. Internally I am responsible for providing our Executive team with revenue projections by period for our entire fiscal year as well as building Board of Director slides to highlight possible business upsides or downsides. I have to take every measure possible to avoid negative financial impacts on my company’s financials which means evaluating every change in forecast, change in design, supplier de-commits / failures, etc… for possible cost implications. Often times when these changes have a negative financial impact I will gather the details and provide the customer with a purchase price variance (PPV) report for them to review and approve or deny. I frequently work with my team to add approved vendors for cost downs, work with my supplier commodity managers to build a relationship that leverages order volumes to decrease our costs on certain commodities, or negotiate possible design changes that we can leverage with our customer to split cost savings with them.
