After a quick trip to watch Ireland play in the 1990 soccer World Cup in Italy, I joined General Electric on their Field Engineering Program (FEP) in September 1990.GE is a global leader in the supply of power generation equipment and energy delivery technologies.Based in Schenectady, NY, USA, I attended GE’s Turbine University for three months before spending an additional six months on field training assignments before graduating from the FEP as what was known within GE as a Turbine Technical Advisor.Turbine technical advisors were responsible for providing technical advice on the installation and start-up of GE’s industrial and aero-derivative gas turbines. However, due to my training and the ethos within GE, my work usually involved full engagement with the works and self-performing of many of the more technically specific tasks. While initially working as a mechanical technical advisor, I also turned my hand to turbine control and electrical panel start-up and commissioning. This gave me a great feel for the overall operation of the power plant and prepared me for taking a more senior role as a lead technical advisor on some of GE’s largest projects and also the management of teams that included steam turbine and balance of plant technical advisors and associated craft.Throughout this period, I worked on the installation of new units, relocation of older units and maintenance of operational units. These units ranged in size from 25MWe to 300MWe and from small simple cycle power plants totaling 60MWe to large critical infrastructure combined cycle projects of 2,500MWe.One of the most enjoyable aspects of this period was the diverse locations that I worked in, which included the USA, Finland, Indonesia, Thailand, Argentina and Malaysia.
