About Liam Johnson

I'm a passionate and diligent mechanical engineering student in my fourth year at Purdue University, currently enrolled in the combined BSME/MSME 5-year program. I'm driven by my desire to constantly learn and develop as an engineer and as a person. I have a focus on sustainability in my campus involvement, and I am particularly interested in the applications of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and controls concepts in industry, specifically in the high-performance and smart buildings sector. Using the technical and interpersonal skills that I have developed, I hope to make a positive impact on peoples' lives that I can recognize each and every single day. I am seeking internship opportunities for summer 2025.

Quantifying the energy and demand cost reduction capabilities of industrial microgrid systems with active load management systems through extensive techno-economic analysis and simulation. Using tools such as Xendee Design, MATLAB, and Python to model thermal/electrical systems and simulate power system control and load demand management scenarios separately and simultaneously.
  • Purdue University
    Undergraduate Researcher
Purdue University Aug 2023 - Present
    West Lafayette, Indiana, United States
Contributing to research through the Purdue DC Nanogrid House under the guidance of assistant professor Kevin J. Kircher. The house serves as an active laboratory where testing for projects is conducted in an inhabited household retrofitted with an industrial inverter and extensive DC architecture. These projects are mainly focused on introducing energy savings to residential buildings through the electrification of appliances, DC device operation, on-site renewable energy generation, and the use of various control systems. My current project involves integrating a solar PV system and battery into the house's nanogrid along with smart controls. Implementing smart controls with the PV and storage systems will increase their efficiencies significantly, providing a cost-effective source of renewable energy which will bolster the DC nanogrid, making the house less dependent on the grid in times of failure and over usage. My most recently completed project was focused on using the extensive data collected in the house to create an interactive interface for users to monitor and influence aspects of the house's operation. This "dashboard" presents the energy usage for devices in the house, indoor and device temperature, weather metrics, past and future (predicted) energy consumption, energy cost, and Co2 savings in the house as compared to a benchmark. The dashboard allows the user to choose a setting between "comfort" and "savings" which effects Model Predictive Control temperature setpoints, and therefore overall power consumption. Then users can see how these changes effect savings and can also compare the MPC operation to a traditional Rule Based Control approach.
