My role as a Research Assistant with the MSSU finds me wearing many hats by supporting my colleagues, all specialized research consultants, in myriad ways. Working in the area of Health Policy and Services research I am closely involved with establishing and managing numerous, diverse research projects and balancing these competing priorities and demands. As these projects and consultations are so diverse in nature I have established a broad and balanced foundation of competence across wide variety of research-related skills. These areas include such things as: literature search, evidence synthesis, knowledge translation, research design, primary data collection, qualitative data analysis, research ethics submission and secondary data access requests and analysis. This position has made me a very well-rounded research professional allowing me to be constantly challenged in new ways and forcing me to continuously learn and master new skills.

Lima Province, Peru

I managed the performance evaluation and reporting system for a youth development project in Peru. I drafted, revised and implemented all data collection tools (e.g. surveys, focus groups) used in the project. Being the manager of this system I was responsible for ensuring the all evaluation related processes and procedures were being properly implemented across multiple training locations within Peru. I was also responsible for maintaining the organization of all qualitative and quantitative data collected as well as the collation and analysis of said data into performance reports for Global Affairs Canada. Because of the position I was in I was a member of the local management team and served as a close adviser to central management in Ottawa. From this I was closely involved in the design and development of the strategic planning for the project.

As the sole research assistant supporting a Randomized Controlled Trial I was responsible for a diverse array of research related tasks. Broadly speaking I supported the methodological implementation of the trial on a day-to-day basis including, promoting, recruiting, consenting and preparing study participants for the trial. I was also responsible for the primary data collection, input and organization during and following trials. Beyond this I was also responsible for conducting literature searches and evidence synthesis related tasks, ultimately collating the findings into a literature review to contribute to an academic manuscript.
