Communications Information Systems Lead - Deployable Joint Interagency Task Force

Wellington, Wellington Region, New Zealand

Jan 2020 - Jun 2021

Section Commander Deployable Communications Section

Auckland, New Zealand

As the Section Commander of the Deployable Communications Section (DCS) I am responsible, with the aid of my staff, for delivering access to communications for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) from remote and austere environments. This has been my second role within the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) were I have had the privilege to command a section. It has truly been a challenge coming back from operational service to a unit that provides such a breadth of services. One which is required to provide them at a moments notice under some of the most tedious conditions. At DCS we are concerned about providing communications to deployed environments. This includes both IT and radio circuits for aircraft and fixed infrastructure. We prepare for and support training and operational deployments both domestically and overseas. Our support normally covers RNZAF forward elements but also usually extended to support wider NZDF efforts where communications is concerned.

Operational Plans And Training - United Nations Truce Supervision Organization

Sour District, Lebanon

After a period of six months as an unarmed military observer I was successful in my application to move to the operational HQ for Lebanon. My role consisted of day to day planning for operational patrols as well as the planning for official state visits from foreign military commanders and dignitaries. I was also required to assist and take on the duties of the training manager for the mission in his absence. The duties requires us to raise, train and sustain a sufficient number of personnel for the mission. Our key focus was ensuring that personnel attached to United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) had the right equipment and preparation to ensure that could patrol and monitor the armistice agreement in accordance with our mandate as safely as the environment would permit.Additional duties included brinning new inductees into the mission area from Jerusalem. This required careful planning to ensure stores and personnel essential to the mission made it across the corridor between Israel and Lebanon.

Unarmed Miliary Observer - United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation

South, Lebanon

This was my first operational tour with the New Zealand Defence Force. I was stationed In Lebanon with the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation (UNTSO) as an unarmed military observer. Our key tasks were to monitor the monitor ceasefire in place, supervise the armistice agreement, prevent isolated incidents from escalating and to assist other United Nations peacekeeping operations in the region.UNTSO military observers are employed to supervise the armistice agreements between Israel and its Arab neighbours. UNTSO activities are spread over the five States comprising the parties to the Armistice Agreements: Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and the Syrian Arab Republic. The armistice agreement was the first peacekeeping operation established by the United Nations under Resolution 50.

Section Commander Air Operations Communications Centre

Auckland, New Zealand

As Section Commander of the Air Operations Communication Centre (AOCC) I was afforded the pridlivdige to lead a small team of personnel for the first time. This provided an excellent grounding to develop my skills as a junior leader within the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). My key focus was on their welfare as well as ensuring that we provided to our key stakeholders across the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF).The AOCC is focused on supporting key communication links to RNZAF aircraft from fixed infrastructure. The links provided allow our assets to pass timely and relevant information critical to commanders to ensure the success of any operation or mission. Strategic Communications Planning - Headquarters Joint Forces New Zealand

Wellington & Wairarapa, New Zealand

During this period I work at both our major headquarters, New Zealand Defence Force HQ (HQ NZDF) and Joint Forces New Zealand HQ (HQ JFNZ). This included strategic operational planning focused on ensuring continuity of NZDF communications for training exercises and operations both domestically and abroad. In addition, I was tasked with revising the training for Communication Officers by the director of Communications and Information Systems for the RNZAF. This saw a us draft a training continuum that ensured consistent development and growth for our junior and senior leaders in this particular field.I was also fortunate enough to pick up a raft of secondary duties which included organising events and entertainments for RNZAF staff in the Wellington region. I was there to ensure that any event was both enjoyable and had a pulse.

Nov 2012 - Feb 2014

Project Management Officer - Aeronautical Medicine Unit

Auckland, New Zealand

I was involved in assisting with hyperbaric training for Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) aircrew. Additionally, I was involved in project work that focused on determining the next generation of noise protection for the RNZAF air and ground crew. This involved noise profiling all RNZAF airframes to determine suitable levels of noise exposure for personnel working on and in close proximity to our aircraft.

Trolley Captain

Ferrymead, Christchurch

Admittedly, this is a self appointed title as I was merely the trolley boy for my local supermarket. The title was in fact bestowed upon me by a jovial, and somewhat drunken shopper, which I favoured as good fortune and so it stuck. I initially took up the position to support the all important need to to drive to and from high school (freedom). I then had to maintain the position to assist financing my living costs whilst studying at university. It gave me a true appreciation for customer service and how to deal with unruly patrons.
