To gain experience in the Civil Engineering field I completed a work experience program on the Townsville Ring Road Section 4 project with Seymour Whyte Civil Contracting. During this time I worked alongside labourers within the construction crews as well as spent time within the office working under the Site Engineers of the project. This allowed me to gain valuable hands on construction experience along with an insight into the technical side of Civil Engineering.

Throughout my School and University holidays I worked as a fruit picker and general farm hand. This position gave me hands on experience which supplied me with a healthy work ethic, which is vital in any position.

My position involved the use of labour in conjunction with the use of heavy machinery and numerous power tools. I was employed in this position throughout a holiday period which was beneficial for my work ethic and labour based skill set.

My time spent with RoadTek gave me a sound understanding of the construction element of civil engineering. This position involved working in a road maintenance crew based out Mareeba followed by a working in a construction crew working on the Ibis Dam Remediation project in Irvinebank. My time spent in these positions was split into two lines of work, the first being a labourer, and the second involved working with the Project Systems Representative (PSR). This role gave me a sound understanding on how a construction crew operates and knowledge about the administration and management of a construction project. Some aspects of the job are covered below:Client engagement: Assisted with site inductions as well as working with and provided general support to the clients representatives.Administration: Assisted with general administration tasks including pre-start meeting, recording and monitoring quality/environmental/safety procedures and document control. Report Development: Carried out risk assessments, material and service inspections recorded plant and equipment checks along with environmental and safety inspections.Research/testing: Numerous tests were carried out through the span of the project including, water tests (Ph, turbidity), concrete slump test and core temperature readings of the concrete.
