After completing my undergraduate studies in Bath, I accepted a PhD to remain at the University. My studies involve synthesising a novel class of antibiotic which I have shown to be active against Gram positive resistant bacterial strains. During my first year I completed a structure-activity relationship study to identify the best compounds for future drug development. After identifying the lead-hit compounds I have undertaken a range of biological assays on these compounds including biofilm prevention/inhibition studies, complement assays and also initial toxicity studies by injecting the compounds into Manduca sexta and Galleria mellonella wax worms. During my studies we have seen a reduction in the concentration required to inhibit the bacteria to a level demonstrated by currently used antibiotics. We are currently conducting further biological assays to identify the exact mode of action of this novel class of antibiotics.

From June 2012-July 2013 I completed a year of my studies at Akzo Nobel International Paint. During this time I was responsible for synthesising copper acrylate polymers which are used in marine protective coatings paints to prevent anti-fouling on large vessels.

During my my first two years at University I worked as a bartender at Bath rugby club.

For over 6 years I became a part-time tennis coach for both adults and children at Bridgend Tennis club. During this time I was responsible for undertaking both group and individual lessons for players of varying ability. In summer months, I was employed by a number of schools in the Bridgend area where I led Tennis PE lessons.
