Sitting in a cafe in Rome, I was struck by an archaeological dig right beneath my feet. Patrons paid no mind all around me while sipping their espresso and cappuccinos. Taking morning walks swapping stories with my host mom, I realized how different and, in some ways, similar life in Italy can be as compared with life in the U.S. My trip to Italy during my sophomore year of high school was a unique experience that reinforced my desire to connect with new people; explore other cultures and create new adventures.Having lived in the Bay area of California, Washington D.C., and Portsmouth, New Hampshire, coupled with trips throughout the U.S. and abroad, I became aware of global differences and the threads that connect us. From my travels and as my view expanded, I realized the importance of helping locally, which drove me to volunteer at the Portsmouth senior citizen center and a non-profit, Education for All Children. I began to realize how interconnected we are in life.By acquiring a Global Studies degree at UVM and maintaining a willingness to engage new people both at home and abroad, I hope to continue life’s journey while taking advantage of opportunities to help others through the work I do both internationally and domestically.
