The Remote Warfare Programme (RWP) was established in 2018, based around the Remote Control project of the Network for Social Change, which had been hosted by ORG since 2013. It was set up to examine changes in military engagement, with a focus on remote warfare (in which countries like the United Kingdom choose to support local and regional forces on the front lines rather than deploying large numbers of their troops).I was the lead for our policy research and overall strategy for achieving positive change to the UK’s defence and security policy.

Being appointed in the Parliamentary Assistant role allowed me to develop my understanding of the political landscape within Westminster. As a Parliamentary Private Secretary (PPS) for the Rt. Hon. Chris Grayling MP in both his roles as Leader of the House of Commons (2015-16) and Transport Secretary (2016-), I have been able to support an MP in an exciting and fast-paced environment. I have provided support in advance of Ministerial Statements by drafting 'helpful interventions' for Government MPs to use at short notice; drafted and distributed the monthly Departmental bulletin and designed an efficient and effective way to collect and collate oral parliamentary questions every six weeks for DfT oral questions. In this role I have gained experience in writing policy briefings; researching Government policy to respond to complex constituent enquiries; drafting and tabling parliamentary questions; and applying for debates. I have taken a lead in organising their local annual Apprenticeship & Jobs Fayre; drafting and designing their monthly newsletter; managing their website and press relations; and providing support and liaising with the Policy Advisers for APPGs.

Following graduation from university, I was employed with a long-serving MP on a permanent contract. Building on the experience I had gained during my time as an Intern, I inherited an extensive remit which included handling complex cases and responding to enquiries on their behalf. In support of their parliamentary duties, I took administrative responsibility of both subject and country based All-Party Parliamentary Groups of which my boss was a member, including securing sponsorship from a leading photography company for the APPG on Photography; organising senior diplomatic and ministerial figures to attend meetings with the APPG on the Maldives and finally, liaising with the Administrator of the APPG on Fire Safety and Fire Rescue. In addition to my duties as Caseworker, I was also frequently assigned to research, prepare and draft speeches. I managed his website and engagement with the press and the media on a number of constituency based campaigns, most prominent among them was their campaign for their constituency to be celebrated as the Alternative City of Culture 2017.

This internship was taken as part of my undergraduate degree. My role included corresponding with constituents and third parties on a diverse range of issues; handling immigration cases, welfare cases, and matters devolved to local authorities. I took a lead on arranging an annual community event for centenarians; inviting local dignitaries, local press and handling the booking and management of the event.
