Design Management was a relatively new skillset to the Canadian construction industry and was becoming increasingly important with the increase in alternative delivery projects such as P3, Design-Build, Construction Management, Integrated Project Delivery and the Alliance Model. The company had tried repurposing existing employees and had also tried using ex design consultants each with very little success. I was brought in to provide proven experience and methods and to combine them with Canadian construction management techniques.Accomplishments: • Set up from scratch all the processes and procedures for Design Management in Infrastructure and was a key member of the team which integrated these into a combined Work Winning Manual. These processes commenced with designer selection and partnering and ended with project handover documentation. After 7 years these processes are now tried and tested.• Lead the Design Management team for multiple project pursuits including Hydro Station replacement, Multiple Light Rail Projects, Multiple Road and Bridge Projects and Multiple Water and Wastewater Projects. This required… Show more Initially working on the Cape Town (Greenline Stadium) Project a 68,000 seat stadium with a construction value of SAR3B and then working on the Medupi and Kusile Coal Fired Power Stations Projects.Accomplishments:• Although the Cape Town Stadium project was a traditional bid build, I was hired by the contractor as a Design Manager to “police” the clients design team which consisted of a variety of joint ventures totalling 64 engineering and architectural consultancies. This required delicate handling as the contractor had no “official” capacity in this regard. This was accomplished successfully through the establishment of control mechanisms to all stages of the design process. Managed to include design review of all designs as part of aiding constructability.• This very time-constrained project (we had 30 months before the 2010 Soccer World Cup) was completed 3 months early and within the original budget. At project close there was only one outstanding claim issue which regarded forward cover on international procurement. • During construction phase of the project I was design and project manager for two design build provisional sum aspects of the project being the roof and façade taking these from procurement through design and all the way to final completion.• As technical lead of the project I also provided updates to the myriad of interested parties who followed the projects including FIFA, politicians from multiple countries, other sporting bodies and also educational materials to third level and second level schools. • Medupi and Kusile Power Stations are the 3rd and 4th largest coal fired power stations in the world. This US$1B project encompassed all the concrete for the structure and sub-structure. This US$1B project encompassed all the concrete for the structure and sub-structure. Accomplishments:• Led a site-based team of 30 personnel who managed the production of over 20,000 concrete layout and reinforcement drawings over a 2 year period• Coordinated all the technical management for the temporary works of formwork for structural concrete pours of up to 50,000m3 at a time including temperature control• Placed a total of 2,500,000 m3 of structural concrete in 2 years• Acted as design manager for an LRT station which was built on the project as a late variation• Acted as design manager for the conversion of much of the client’s project design of traditional reinforced concrete to post-tensioned slabs• Managed all the professional photography and document control on site• On completion of the airport went on to handle all the value engineering of a $200M apartments project.
