About Liam Clark

I am a recent graduate with a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Victoria, where I was also a member of the Men's Varsity Rugby program. As a student-athlete, I have gained many valuable skills such as a strong work ethic, organizational abilities, and an eagerness to learn which has led to me excelling in both the classroom and on the field. Throughout my university career, I was able to learn many aspects of commerce and apply my knowledge throughout three co-op work terms. During my second co-op, I gained a large interest in accounting and finance working as a staff accountant. This led me to develop a strong passion for Tax and Assurance, and a desire to further strengthen my accounting abilities. After I graduate from the University of Victoria I plan to pursue my CPA designation. Once I receive my CPA I hope to have the ability to help individuals and corporations with various services from Tax Planning to Financial Consulting. Apart from school, sports, and work I enjoy exploring the local area and meeting new diverse, like-minded individuals. Whether that be in a professional or casual setting I love to meet and connect with people.

During my final semester at UVic, I decided to apply what I had learned in the classroom and the workplace through an entrepreneurial venture where I worked as a Freelance Bookkeeper. For the summer, I did the bookkeeping for a pair of UVic co-op students' painting business in Vancouver. During this experience, I completed various financial tasks for them such as Monthly Income Statements, Payroll for five employees, and high-level financial advice on areas to be more profitable. As well, I will prepare their tax returns to reduce their tax liability to the best possible outcome. This experience was very eye-opening and taught me valuable lessons such as time management, critical thinking, and resilience. I hope to continue this venture in the future to a point where I can expand my client range and assist other local businesses with their financial needs.

In my last co-op position at Dusanj & Wirk, my primary focus was on personal tax returns. During this experience, I completed personal returns of various difficulties such as Self-Employed individuals of various sizes of businesses, individuals with rental properties, and individuals selling and transferring shares of CCPCs. Working on personal returns was very rewarding as I would have direct communication with clients, which allowed me to understand their needs and apply my knowledge to reduce their tax liabilities. Another rewarding feature of this co-op was working on the personal returns of owners of corporations that I prepared their corporate year-ends for. This was particularly interesting as I was able to see how Income was distributed from the business level to the individual level through various forms.

During my second co-op at UVic, I had my first taste of accounting. After completing core year of my commerce degree I got engaged and eager to learn more from my accounting and finance. I was lucky enough to secure an accounting position where I could apply my knowledge from the classroom to real-life situations.Throughout this co-op, my primary focus was on the corporate end of accounting completing compilation and review engagements. During these engagements, I would perform various tasks such as: adjusting journal entries, preparing financial statements, and preparing various information returns such as T2s, T4s, and T5s. I gained valuable skills from this co-op but most importantly I gained a passion for accounting that laid the foundational path for my future career.
  • Origen Air

In my first co-op at UVic, I had the pleasure to work at a local tech start-up. This experience was at the start of the global pandemic, and the product Origen Air offered was prepared to help alleviate businesses' pain points. Some of my various roles at Origen Air Consisted of Research and analysis to produce their Business Plan, perform sales calls to potential clients create connections and relay results to executives, and produce various slide decks for executives to pitch with. Overall, the main highlight of this experience was working in a fast-paced flat organization. As a small start-up when I joined the team I could work and contribute directly with the executives. As well, it was very engaging and motivating to see that my contribution was being recognized and implemented in the business.
