My name is Liam Halpin and I am a Senior studying Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I entered the University of Wisconsin-Madison out of high school as a sophomore because my 35+ AP credits satisfied freshman computer science, physics, chemistry, statistics, and first and second year calculus. I will graduate in May of 2025 finishing in 3 years total. I am on the Dean’s List and have been for every term while at UW Madison. In addition to my B.S. in Computer Science, I am also minoring in Game Design. Wisconsin-Madison’s Game Design minor program concentrates on the specific theory and practice of developing games. This program requires students to take specialized courses such as Videogames & Learning, Game Design, Intro to Digital Forms, Programming, and 3D Digital Studio in addition to the requisite core Comp Sci classes. This is a well rounded joint program requiring students to work with the Schools of Education, Art, and Computer Science.I am especially interested in the digital/video game industry as the perfect opportunity to bring my skills in programming, graphic design, sound production, and mathematics to their logical intersection. I am smart, I work hard, and I care about what I do. I have been interested in game algorithms and game technology for many years and have worked on several programming projects, both group and individual, for school and independently. I have developed several video games over the years and have solid experience with game design, UI, pixel art, sound, and the math that pulls it all together.

  Over the summer of 2024, I worked for the game development company Next Play Games as a software Engineer Intern. Our goal was to convert the company’s already existing sports-based card game into a web and mobile app version from the ground up. The company operated with over 40 developers that were split into specialized teams. My team was mainly responsible for the login/signup functionality. We were also tasked with maintaining security in our codebase to make sure all our customer data was not vulnerable. Right from the beginning of the project, I was in frequent contact with other teams to assist with any sudden problems that inevitably arose from merging all the different aspects of the project.We used React to create a dynamic frontend with an emphasis on user experience and visual clarity. We also worked frequently with HTML and CSS files for the cosmetic aspects of the multiple site pages.When the frontend API would send HTTP requests to the backend, we utilized the Express framework to create a simple and robust backend API. In the backend, we regularly accessed the company’s database using SQL, and regularly made use of external packages.I was directly responsible for several specific pages, working on both the frontend and backend for those pages. I also assisted my fellow team members if they needed additional help with their pages. We were given deadlines and were expected to meet those deadlines. I consistently met my deadlines and ended the summer with all of my target items completed.
