My name is Liam Montgomery. I studied Psychology and Criminal Justice/Criminology at the University of Maryland where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in both. I then studied at the University of Glasgow (Scotland) for a Master of Science degree in Global Mental Health. During my time at the University of Maryland, I underwent large amounts of coursework pertaining to mental health, psychology, sociology, victimization, addiction, domestic violence, helping/therapeutic skills, and more. While studying, I participated in an internship at the Office of the Public Defender Baltimore county where I frequently contacted juvenile offenders on the phone to interview them about their experiences in detention facilities. I also conducted some of these interviews in person, where I was proficient at building relationships with these individuals and adapting a position of understanding and compassion. During this internship, I lead multiple meetings with the team of attorneys to update them on my progress and make suggestions for improvement in detention facilities. This internship also largely familiarized me with the court process as I attended many adjudications. After graduating, I participated in an internship at St Vincent’s Villa where I worked both one on one and in large groups with children separated from their families for various reasons (domestic violence, abuse, substance addiction, court orders, etc.). While working at St Vincent’s Villa, I was able to build connections with multiple children and practice my skills of conflict resolution and mediation. My master’s degree at the University of Glasgow has educated me on tackling issues of mental health through a multicultural viewpoint, understanding that people from different cultures and different backgrounds respond to trauma and mental health issues differently, and must be treated accordingly. I have submitted a dissertation on the topic of ‘reducing the risk of child maltreatment through interventions for substance abusing mothers’. Other relevant research experience I have includes conducting research for an autism best practices treatment project for the NHS in London, England. Most recently, I have worked as an Autism Instructor at Trellis Services in Towson Maryland. This position greatly familiarized me with the needs of children with autism and the challenges that must be hurdled in order to work with this sensitive population.
