BBC - LiveThe Live team uses an agile process, continuously improving and iterating in a build, measure, learn feedback loop. As a team, we investigated ways to improve the user experience and encourage audience participation on BBC Live pages. I was tasked with developing an MVP of a reactions component to enable the user to ‘like’ or ‘dislike’ a post. I wrote accessible markup for the reactions component, working with UX to refine a design that works across devices. Following a TDD approach, I built a reusable react component that manages the reactions that are displayed, their associated content (SVG and text) and their state. To aid in the reusability across the BBC, certain bits of functionality such as analytics and custom click events were abstracted.

BBC - LiveWorking with the Technical Architect and Technical Lead, we built a scalable, real-time counting service; flexible enough to work with new report schemas and able to handle a significant amount of data using Amazon Web Services (AWS). This included serverless architecture comprised of API Gateway, Lambda and S3, as well as Kinesis Firehose, Kinesis Analytics, CloudWatch and CloudFront. The service processes data for all user events sent to the User Activity Service (UAS) from across the BBC including from iPlayer, Live (News and Sport), Childrens, TV Applications and Ideas.

BBC - API ManagementAPI Management is responsible for the storage, protection and acquisition of API keys for all teams across the BBC. The Developer Portal is an internal tool, used by developers to create, renew and delete API keys. I conducted an accessibility audit of the Developer Portal and implemented changes to the application to ensure that the internal tool complied with the Equality Act 2010 (UK), which ensures a service (website or internal tool), must be accessible to everyone who needs it.

BBC - LiveThe Live Guide promotes all live content for BBC Sport, which has a significant role to play in the experience users receive for sporting events such as Olympic Games and Commonwealth Games on both the web and mobile apps. My work on the live guide lead to the BBC Live team adopting an accessibility-first approach to development, ensuring all new components are correctly implemented for assistive technology which saves large amounts of time when compared to retroactively correcting functionality and markup.

BBC - TV and Mobile PlatformsTV Platforms (TVP) develops all BBC services available through a TV, such as iPlayer, Redbutton+, Sport, News and supporting services and frameworks. As a software engineer, I worked on the development of these services during the Glastonbury music festival 2016 and the Rio Olympic Games 2016. I initiated and conducted a full accessibility audit of the TV Platforms services and provided the BBC accessibility team with recommendations and insight whilst they drafted accessibility guidelines for TV.

BBC - Content DiscoveryBBC Homepage is a high traffic webpage that connects users to curated content from all across the BBC’s online services. I primarily worked on the development of this service’s personalization features, enabling users to enable and disable content to their preference. My feature contribution was a module to promote content that may be of interest to the user, enabling them to continue to receive content on that subject. I initiated and conducted an accessibility audit of the page, which included the testing of visuals, semantics of the code and assistive technology user journeys. The audit I conducted on the BBC Homepage prioritized accessibility fixes in the development backlog and established new features that could be added to improve the user experience with assistive technology.

Preston, United Kingdom

Preston Student Television (PSTV) is the University of Central Lancashire's (UCLan) student TV station. It is run by volunteers and funded by the UCLan Student Union. As the Webmaster, I manage the PSTV website, including the design, content and security. Since taking over the position in October, I have been working on a re-design of the website, making the site responsive, improving the user experience (UX) and ensuring the content is fit for purpose. My intention is to ensure the site will be easy to inherit by my successor, removing the obstacles that I had to deal with during the takeover from my predecessor.

Coniston Gifts is a leading retail and wholesale company of Lake District souvenirs, toys and games, slate products, textiles, camping and outdoor products. During my time at Coniston Gifts, I modernized their website to take orders online from retail and wholesale customers as well as launched their main product lines on Amazon and Ebay.
