I'm a European and UK Patent Attorney working in the Life Sciences sector at leading international law firm CMS.I help clients protect their biotech and pharmaceutical inventions, advising on all aspects of patent law including drafting and prosecution of UK and European patent applications, worldwide portfolio management, infringement and validity advice, and multi-party offensive and defensive opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO. I work with a wide range of organisations from universities to SMEs to large corporate entities, both local and international, and handle patent work in all areas of the life sciences, including antibody-based therapeutics, recombinant DNA and protein products, transgenic organisms, stem cells, diagnostic and environmental assays, microbiology, immunology and vaccines, as well as having extensive experience in pharmaceutical formulations.I graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a first class degree in Biological Sciences, specialising in Pharmacology. I was subsequently awarded a PhD from the University of Bristol for research into central nervous system mechanisms involved in processing somatosensory information, in collaboration with GSK. Having undertaken two periods of research in pharmaceutical companies, ranging from genomic and proteomic approaches to pre-clinical systems physiology, and worked as a postdoctoral neuroscientist at the University of Bristol following my PhD, I have a broad range of technical experience gained from both academic and industrial R&D in the life sciences. Prior to training as a patent attorney, I worked for Oxford University's technology transfer company helping to commercialise academic research.
