I am a data photographer. I take snapshots of performance with assessments.I take many different kinds of pictures with assessments. Some pictures are close-ups that reveal intricate details regarding what individuals have learned following instruction. Others are panoramic, providing a big-picture perspective on the strengths and gaps associated with specific strategic approaches and policy decisions. I take data pictures of the same subjects over time to examine the impact of events that have touched them.Similar to the use of a camera, assessments can yield data that produce fuzzy or precise images. The quality of the data picture that emerges depends largely on the skill and creativity of the person behind the lens. As a measurement and evaluation specialist, my job is to design and build reliable assessments that capture valid information and produce crisp pictures.I have taken data pictures of a variety of subjects. I have created portraits that enable others to see how timely access to well-organized data reports on test performance can change student attitudes about learning and renew teachers’ enthusiasm for teaching.
