The majority of my work as a HSE intern was focused on the environmental aspects of the company. I was given the task of performing a gap analysis of their compliance to ISO 14001 from evaluating their environmental management system. This gave me a valuable insight into the requirements of the international standard and how to perform a gap analysis. I also conducted environmental risk assessments by carrying out site surveys. From this I gained skills in pinpointing hazards and identifying the impact they could cause. The assessments require identifying mitigation techniques which can be applied within varying environments. From carrying out an audit I was introduced to the audit procedure and the most effective manner to go about conducting an audit. The knowledge I developed was complemented by personal development through improved confidence within the workplace and my ability to work in an office environment with a range of people and skills.

During 5 weeks of work experience with this environmental consultancy firm I conducted several desk studies using acquired data and compiling it into a report. This included analysing historical maps, bore hole data, assessing flood risk and land use. To follow up the office-based work, I helped conduct site visits to gain a wider view of the location and identify any materials or previous land uses which may be of concern. I was also involved with collecting soil samples at sites that we found required a land contamination investigation. I had the opportunity to be part of an air quality investigation within a factory that worked with lead and witnesses an assessment into monitoring ground gases with a building. This experience gave me a valuable insight into the responsibilities of an environmental consultant.
