Claims And Legal Advisor
This position involved Claims Management of medical malpractice claims against Doctors and provision of a 24hour advisory legal service to Doctors across Australia. This role necessitated good relationships with doctors, legal and health experts, barristers and solicitors, actuaries and re-insurers to manage malpractice claims and complaints, disciplinary matters, health law issues and to provide credible, trustworthy, practical legal advice to members. I was a member of the Estimates Committee, the Medical Advisory Panel and the Cases Committee which required me to prepare succinct papers, attend all meetings and report on the current progress of claims and risk management issues, set estimates and review estimates of claims and potential claims.
Claims Manager (Lawyer)
This role at AON involved management of the Medical Malpractice Programme for the Department of Human Services, South Australia. I reported to the Executive Director and the Insurance Services Manager of the Department of Human Services and to the Captive Insurer (SAICORP) on all claims developments and their ultimate outcomes. I was responsible for supervision and administration of the team managing the claims resolution process which was directed at the early and efficient cost effective resolution of claims including appointment of and instructions to panel solicitors and barristers.I also provided advice and education to health unit staff regarding patient complaints that arose in the Public Health Units of the State that could result in a claim for compensation if not managed appropriately.

I also worked on general insurance files, workers compensation files, motor vehicle accident files and health law generally. The role gave me experience and understanding of insurance law and managing files across the spectrum of Insurance matters. With this experience and having formed excellent working relationships I successfully applied for the position at AON as the lead claim manager lawyer of the Public Health Medical Malpractice Programme referred to above.

I practiced in Insurance law, Health law, Risk Management and Medical Malpractice legal work. Due to my clinical experience and legal qualifications I was seconded to the Women’s and Children’s Hospital as the inaugural Risk Manager for twelve months. The position initially involved setting up the office and the team, forging key relationships with stakeholders and creating a team environment with medical personnel at various levels. I notified claims to the (then) Health Commission Administrators, and provided them with assistance with investigations. In liaison with clinical staff I created the foundation Risk Management Policies and Procedures for the Women’s and Children’s Hospital and Ashford Community Hospital.
