This meant turnover of people with lived experiences (PLE) was high, and a busy and quick department. On my placement, a large amount of the work was to carry out section 9 of the Care Act (2014) needs assessments, to determine what care and support an individual is eligible to. This varied from older people who required assistance with daily activities of living, people diagnosed with a terminal illness who required financial support, people with dementia who require 24/7 care in a care home and carers assessments (section 10 of the Care Act 2014). In addition, implementation of section 42 of the Care Act 2014 places responsibility on the local authority to make enquires if an individual is at risk of harm, abuse and/or neglect. With guidance from my Supervisor, I held many safeguarding cases, and chaired many safeguarding strategy meetings. I handled sensitive cases. This required professional curiosity and critical analysis by questioning information shared with me, as well as considering the risk of professional curiosity on the individual who may be at risk of harm, abuse and/or neglect. In placement, the Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 was used to promote the rights and protection of PLE’s who may not have capacity. In all cases involving the MCA 2005, I carried out all practicable steps, as stated in section 1 of the MCA (2005), to provide the PLE with all information to make an informed decision, for example, discussing care options, what social care can do and what is required from the PLE. In addition, I promoted the right that PLE’s can make unwise decisions, and it should not be assumed they lack capacity due to the unwise decision. Show less

I was the first point of contact for many patients, families/carers who may identify as struggling to come to terms with diagnoses, who may be bereft and grieving. I dealt with many emotionally challenging calls and signposted the service user to their next point of contact. I worked on several projects alongside the Social Worker and Safeguarding Team including developing reference files for key safeguarding standard operating procedures, Mental Capacity and DoLS (now Liberty Protection Safeguards) guidance and other relevant hospice policies and information. These files formed part of hospice wide training, as a result I have a good understanding of associated social work and safeguarding policies and legislations.Development and display of educational boards regarding safeguarding e.g., safeguarding issues that have emerged during the COVID pandemic, this included: increased domestic abuse and risk of mental health problems and suicide, elderly people particularly vulnerable to scammers and fraudsters and a checklist of things that staff can do to keep vulnerable people safe during the pandemic. I organised this information to be displayed internally on the hospice pin board for all hospice staff and volunteers to access.Safeguarding Champion which involved attending meetings with the safeguarding lead and other Safeguarding Champions from other hospice departments.
