Group General Counsel, Head Of Sustainability & External Relations Director
Sydney, Australia
Member of Lion CEO's senior executive team, I led the Legal, External Relations, ESG/Sustainability and Container Deposit teams. My high-performing team played an integral role in the key strategies, transactions and partnerships across Lion's business. I focussed on bringing in the external view, analysing risk and balancing perspectives to drive good governance and shared value outcomes for the business and our communities. This involved moving with skill between community, industry, government, business partners and our shareholder Kirin to build strong enduring relationships. Board roles included Lion Board, Kirin's International Advisory Board, Remedy Drinks (JV with Kin Group), VicReturn, Bevchain (JV with Linfox), LN Nominees (NZ super fund). I built Lion's ESG credentials from the ground up to become a key element of Lion's identity and reputation, with accolades including a coveted Banksia Award in 2022. Our ESG strategies focussed on balance between the "S" and the "E" including strong Modern Slavery credentials and endorsement of our Innovate RAP in 2023.As Group General Counsel, I was responsible for legal governance, risk management and legal execution of strategic projects across Australia, New Zealand and the US. This included large M&A projects and strategic commercial partnerships. As Company Secretary of the Lion Board, I supported the Chair in running the Board and maintaining a strong relationship with our shareholder, Kirin. As External Relations Director, I managed a complex web of regulatory and policy issues across the alcohol sector, including excise tax settings, container deposit schemes, responsible advertising, sponsorships, labelling. I also managed the regulatory and policy agenda for Lion's Dairy and Drinks business, including the "milk wars" and nutrition policy issues. Through my team of outstanding communications professionals, I managed crises and issues including Lion's COVID response and the 2020 cyber attack.
