As an undergraduate researcher with Shiflett Research group, I investigated the chemical removal of sulfites from wine. I collaborated with mentors and team members on a daily basis to design a 3D prototype for a device to be placed on the end of a wine bottle to remove sulfites at the time of pouring. I lead also lead weekly group meetings with professors, consulting scientists, post-doctoral researchers, and other undergraduate team members to communicate progress on the project. To assess the percent removal of sulfites, I tested materials such as ion exchange resins and zeolites using ion chromatography and colorimetry while conducting in depth literature research regarding wine chemistry. In previous semesters with Shiflett Research Group, I researched the process and cost efficiency of desalination using clathrate hydrates and environmentally friendly refrigerants in an effort to address anticipated global water shortages. I also created a complete inventory of all zeolites and resins in Chemical Engineering labs and helped to ensure their safe handling and storage throughout all experimental processes. I also leveraged previous experience with The Leaven to create the Shiflett Group's website to help advertise our research and find prospective sponsors and students. The zeolite library and Shiflett Group website are both in use to this day.

I researched drinking water policy by personally contacting health and environment departments in 38 U.S. states to understand the nuances of their policies and how they are implemented and enforced. Following my research, I wrote Kansas’ first-ever bulk potable water haul policy to protect consumers of degrading and malfunctioning water systems. I was also involved in collaborative efforts with members of the Kansas Department of Agriculture to improve collective efforts to protect food safety through bulk transport process.

As a website developer, I built and manage a national award-winning news website for The Leaven, a local Kansas City newspaper with a subscription of over 50,000 families. I taught the Leaven staff to use Wordpress to add and manage their own content on the site while continuing to write and photograph stories for the paper’s print edition. In the summer of 2015, I received the Archbishop Edward T. O’Meara Award from The Pontifical Mission Societies for a story written about Good Shepherd Catholic Church’s mission relationship with a small rural community in El Salvador.
