CurrentAfter working with one of Western Australia’s top costs experts I established Libby Smith Legal and provide advice and representation on costs matters in all West Australian Courts. Commencing in costs law just prior the introduction of the Legal Profession Uniform Law in Western Australia, provided the opportunity to be immersed in the subject when it was of particular interest to all legal practitioners. For the first 6 months of the operation of the LPUL I provided advice to law practices in relation to trust accounting and reporting obligations, regulatory compliance, and subsequently drawing Bills of Costs and providing client advice, as well as drafting costs submissions. Prior to commencing in costs law, I practised in general commercial law. I have a wealth of commercial experience having worked as a taxation accountant providing services to mixed business structures, a co-director participating in the growth of various successful professional services practices, and a business unit manager for a healthcare enterprise with a $20m+ turnover and negotiated contractual disputes between internal and external stakeholders. I hold a Bachelor of Commerce from Murdoch University (1992), a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Notre Dame (2010), completed the Certified Practising Accountants Program (1992) and Practical Legal Training (2013). I was admitted as a barrister and solicitor of the Supreme Court of Western Australia on 2 July 2013.Services currently provided include advice and representation in the drawing of Bills of Costs on a party/party, special costs and indemnity costs basis, attendance at taxation, objections to and reviews of taxation, and advice and representation with respect to Applications for the Assessment of Costs. I am available at any time to discuss costs law enquiries by email at libby@libbysmithlegal.com.au and mobile 0487 053 021.
