Only part of this gluten is used as a high-value bakery ingredient, while the excess is mostly used in animal feed. In view of this there is continuous search for alternative gluten applications with a higher added value. As gluten contains high molar mass constituents and unique network forming properties it can readily be converted into a variety of biobased materials. Developing materials from renewable resources is crucial to decrease our dependence on fossil resources and to reduce CO2 emissions. Producing materials with a performance equal or better than that of their petrochemical counterparts remains, however, challenging.On-going research at KU Leuven focusses on the use of gluten for the production of thermoplastic vulcanisates (TPV’s). These materials combine the typical properties and functional performance of rubbers with the melt processability of thermoplastic polymers, resulting in recyclable materials. Furthermore, wheat gluten intrinsically crosslinks under the influence of heat, eliminating the need for an additional chemical crosslinker. Within the space of commercial bio-based thermoplastics, the gluten TPV’s offer a new functionality not seen before, which is the elastomeric behavior. Moreover, depending on the thermoplastic component the gluten TPV’s can be designed to be fully biodegradable. Envisaged applications include, amongst others, indoor soft touch materials and application within for example agriculture and horticulture for which the fully biodegradable character offers additional advantages for both the application itself and the environment. Phd
My PhD was a part of both an IOF and SBO project. Both projects focused on the development of gluten-based high-performance polymer materials and composites. More specifically, I developed wheat gluten based thermoplastic vulcanizates. The PhD also included the guidance of both bachelor and master students for laboratory practices and thesis research.
