I’m on a mission to eradicate the world of boring science communication. That is why I craft creative storytelling websites, infographics & animated videos that are engaging, fun & informative. Why settle for anything less than unique and inspiring? My goal is to put a smile on people’s faces while they are learning about important research. I love making science and other complex topics fun & accessible to anyone and always try make the world a better place. I do this by combining my skills in storytelling, science communication, design & technology. If you work with me, I’ll push you out of your comfort zone to make your research memorable. In my work, I’m always honest, transparent and open to feedback, and I expect the same from people I collaborate with. Don’t worry, it will be worth it and make the end-result better! I have a background as a nutrition researcher at Harvard School of Public Health and VU University Amsterdam. There, I published several peer-reviewed scientific articles on (trans) fats and cardiovascular disease, as well as a more recent article on food hypes (2020). In my academic career, I was frustrated by the way science was communicated. Research findings are often presented as just a peer-reviewed paper, a presentation with dozens of bullet points read out loud or a list of unattractive results that nobody wants to read. To battle this and help researchers create beautiful content, Stephan van Duin and I founded The Online Scientist in 2012. We want to create more impact with research by communicating science to the public by making user-friendly websites, infographics, animated videos, presentations, and e-learning courses for researchers, consortia and universities. We also give workshops & lectures in science communication on topics such as writing, presentation design, posters & graphical abstracts, (social) media, and impact. With my best-selling book Eet als een expert (Eat like an expert) and my work with food platform I'm a Foodie I want to get evidence-based nutrition science to the public. I also give lectures on nutrition & pseudoscience for a wide audience, to teach people about nutrition, misinformation and critical thinking. I get excited about new technology & user-friendly design, new ways to explain complex content, battling misinformation and making a positive difference in this world. Do you want to work with me? Let me help you get out of your comfort zone and make something memorable! Visit my website for more information and examples: www.liesbethsmit.com.
