“Film is one of the three universal languages, the other two: mathematics and music.” — Frank Capra.Act I: The beginning of my film starts at Mulberry Lane School of Music, where, through attending Kindermusik, I learned the foundations of music theory. By the time I was in fourth grade, my brain had incorporated the theory and understanding of rhythms, tempos, and beats into the unit of fractions and ratios we were learning in math class. Act II: As my journey progressed, my love of music expanded to include the collaborative community of piano performance and musical theatre. Simultaneously, my relationship with math advanced to pre-calculus and calculus, and by the end, I was majoring in Finance. Music not only helped to support my understanding of fractions and ratios in math class during school, but it also promoted my memory capacity, progressing from memorizing classical piano pieces such as Sonata in C Major (by Platt) to memorizing a variety of complicated food and drink orders in the fast-paced environment of restaurant serving. Likewise, I was able to connect the cross-team collaboration and communication skills gained through musical theatre to my position as Head of Directors within VIU’s Business Students’ Association club by, for instance, working directly with the various BSA Councils to educate and support them in developing their strategic plans, budgets, and short- and long-term goals.Act III: I currently work as a bookkeeper at Deximal Accounting Inc., utilizing my innate inclination towards structure, repetition, and patterns I learned from music to analyze and study the relationship between numbers. In this position, I create financial reports, manage accounts payable and receivable, and process invoices, payments, payroll and other accounting transactions in a timely manner.
