The nature of the mural can be unpredictable- the conditions are rarely determined by the artist, rather the artist is given the task of creating artwork on a particular surface, in a particular environment. This lack of predictability is an appealing challenge and one that I trained for in my early years as a theatrical Scenic Artist, where painting on a team required my contributions to join seamlessly with other artists to ensure a unified result. This scenic education enables me to paint in many different styles and to collaborate with many different people, which allows me a great deal of artistic flexibility as I approach murals; the flexibility that is necessary to create art when you can’t control all the elements.
